Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present two key documents before the Parliament over the next fortnight — the Economic Survey and the Budget — outlining the fiscal policy landscape of India. The two serve distinct but complementary roles in shaping the economic strategy and priorities of the country.
The Economic Survey for FY27 will be presented to both Houses on January 29. Sitharaman will outline the details before both houses of Parliament before tabling the document. Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran is likely to lead the subsequent press conference to explain the key points.
What is the Economic Survey?
The Economic Survey is akin to a detailed report card on the financial performance of India over the past year. It offers comprehensive analysis and covers aspects such as GDP growth, inflation, fiscal deficit, external sector developments, employment trends, and sectoral performance. It also provides policy recommendations based on economic analysis.
Key dates to watch
The Budget session of Parliament will begin on January 28 with President Droupadi Murmu addressing the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha members assembled in the Lok Sabha chamber. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is likely to present the Economic Survey in both the Houses of Parliament after the president’s address.
According to the provisional calendar issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the House will also meet on January 29. The FM will present the General Budget on February 1 — designated as the Budget Day by the government.
The first part of the Budget session will conclude on February 13. Lawmakers will again reconvene on March 9 — allowing time for scrutiny of Budget proposals by various parliamentary committees.
