‘Only 1 more year to go’! Rahul Gandhi tells BJP after Budget, says this on Rajasthan bypolls

Budget 2018: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday slammed Narendra Modi government, claiming the latter has not been able to meet people’s expectations. Tweeting hours after Arun Jaitley presented Budget 2018, Gandhi said the government is still making promises and failed to bring jobs for youths.

On Thursday, Congress sweeped by-elections in Rajasthan’s Alwar and Ajmer parliamentary seats and in Mandalgarh Assembly constituency. An elated Gandhi congratulated his partymen for electoral wins in Rajasthan by-elections, coincidently on the day of Budget 2018. “Well done Rajasthan Congress! Proud of each and every one of you. This is a rejection of the BJP by the people of Rajasthan,” Gandhi tweeted.

Budget 2018 Live Updates: Arun Jaitley makes record with maiden Hindi speech

The Congress emerged as the clear winner in Alwar and Ajmer parliamentary seats, earlier held by the BJP in 2014, and also won the Mandalgarh assembly seat. In Alwar, Congress candidate Karan Singh Yadav was leading by 39,826 votes over BJP’s Jaswant Yadav after 15 rounds of counting. While Raghu Sharma of Congress was leading BJP rival Ram Swaroop Lamba by 23,882 votes in Ajmer. Coincidently, the victory came on the day Jaitley announced Budget 2018.

Earlier, Congress termed Budget 2018-19 as “defeatist” and a “big letdown”. Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said the government has “thrown in the towel” and conceded it has failed to address key issues of the economy. He added that budget proposals should have been “bold and radical”. Chidambaram further said the finance minister failed the fiscal consolidation test and the same will have serious consequences. The statement came soon after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley completed his budget 2018 speech.

Earlier, Congress commented on Budget 2018 even before it was announced. Posting a tweet, Congress said the presentation of the Union Budget will be last from a government which “destroyed the country’s economy”. The Congress tweeted: “Desh ki arthvyavastha ko tabaah karne wali sarkaar ka Akhiri poorna Budget, iske baad Janata inko dikhayegi bahar ka rasta; shuruat Rajasthan se ho chuki hai” ( Last full Budget of a government which destroyed the country’s economy. This budget will pave the way for the ouster of this government by the people of India. The beginning has been made from Rajasthan), the Congress said. FM Arun Jaitley announced his 5th and last regular before 2018 elections. The FM said that budget 2018 is pro-poor and pro-farmer. Budget was welcomed by industry leaders and members of ruling NDA government.
