Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday announced that salaries of president, vice-president and governors will be revised to Rs 5 Lakh, 4 Lakhs and 3.5 Lakhs per month respectively. The Finance Minister made the announcement while delivering his Budget 2018 speech. Jaitley’s announcement was welcomed by fellow MPs. He also proposed a change in the procedure of revision of Member of Parliament’s salaries.    “These emoluments are proposed to be revised to Rs 5 lakh for the President, Rs 4 lakh for the Vice President and to Rs 3.5 lakh per month for the Governors,” Jaitley said in the Lok Sabha.

The President, who holds the highest office in the country and serves as the supreme commander of the defence forces in the country, currently gets Rs 1.5 Lakh as salary.

The proposal was made to hike the salaries to Rs 5,00,000 a month was made in 2016. Arun Jaitley on Thursday announced Modi government’s 5th budget. The budget was considered most challenging for the ruling government. After the implementation of 7th pay commission, it was reported that President and the Vice-President get less salaries as compared to the top bureaucrats and service chiefs.

In 2016, Home Ministry had proposed an enhancement of the salaries of the President, the Vice President and the Governors was prepared by the Union Home Ministry. However, a decision was not taken on it for nearly two years. After the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission’s awards on January 1, 2016, the salary of the Cabinet Secretary was revised to Rs 2.25 lakh per month.

Prior to today’s hike, salaries of the President, Vice-President and Governors were last hiked in 2008 when the Parliament had approved a three-fold increase. The president use to receive a salary of Rs 50,000, while Vice-President’s salary was Rs 40,000. The governor was paid an amount of Rs 36,000 per month.

Also, the finance minister proposed a law for an automatic revision of salaries for Parliamentarians every five years indexed to inflation. Jaitley added that there had been a public debate on emoluments paid to Members of Parliament as the lawmakers are allowed to fix their own emoluments had invited criticism.
