Volvo takes crossover brand into sedan territory; launches S60 Cross Country

Luxury sedans in India are revered for the comfort they provide, for the opulence that comes in abundance, and for the value that is attached to the brand. But such sedans do have some shortcomings, and one such—i.e. low ground clearance—easily gets reflected in Indian driving conditions. More often than not, they scrape tallish speed-breakers or find it hard manoeuvring flooded roads.

Volvo S60 Cross Country tries to be different. Launched in India on Friday for R38.9 lakh, ex-showroom, Mumbai, it is powered by a 2.4-litre five-cylinder diesel engine that churns out 190bhp at 4,000rpm and 420Nm of torque between 1,500rpm and 3,000rpm. The S60 Cross Country—unveiled at Detroit Motor Show last year—is based on the company’s S60 sedan. It comes with all-wheel drive (AWD) mechanism and measures 4,638mm in length, 1899mm in width and 1,539mm in height. The chassis is raised by 65mm—as against the S60 sedan—and this leads to an SUV-rivalling ground clearance of 201mm.

Tom von Bonsdorff, managing director, Volvo Auto India, said during the launch that nothing could be more appropriate for India than a cross country sedan. “Our customers want their cars to glide through the rough roads, but had to compromise on the rear seat comfort of a sedan. The S60 Cross Country addresses both these in a unique blend of sporty ruggedness. We have included all the capability-driven features standard, thus offering a unique ‘all weather, all road’ experience.”

The S60 Cross Country gets a honeycomb grille with the Volvo Iron Mark emblazoned. The increased height gives the car a more confident stance compared to the sedan, and wheel-arch embellishments further integrate the crossover look. Dual exhaust tail pipes are integrated and active bending lights are standard.

Inside the cabin, the design is pure Scandinavian—no unnecessary clutter. The attention to detail is impressive and the car features sport seats available in single or dual-tone leather with contrasting stitching.

Because it is a Volvo, safety is standard. It gets the unique City Safety feature which has laser-assisted automatic braking—the company claims it now brakes from 50kph if it detects an obstruction. Then there are features such as electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist, hill descent control, hill start assist as standard. Volvo claims that, on the S60 Cross Country, the powertrain comes with DPF (diesel particulate filter) that traps harmful particles like PM2.5 and PM10 by up to 99%. However, because its engine size is over 2000cc, the S60 Cross Country cannot be sold in Delhi as of now; the Supreme Court had, in December last year, banned the registration of diesel cars and SUVs above 2000cc in the national capital till March 31, in an attempt to clean up the city’s deteriorating air.
