When it is launched on October 26, 2015 the Baleno — Maruti Suzuki’s first premium hatchback — will take on the highly successful Hyundai Elite i20, the new Honda Jazz and the Volkswagen Polo and in the process upset the established order of things in this car segment. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno, which has high localisation levels of 99% to begin with, is expected to be priced from Rs 5.10 lakh onwards — close to the base variants of Elite i20 and Jazz.
Although the premium end of the market has never been Maruti Suzuki’s strength area, the company has tasted some success with the S-Cross — at least in the way the brand is being perceived by some customers. Like the S-Cross, the Baleno will also be sold only through the company’s premium sales channel, the Nexa.
