The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the discontinuation of the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for new FASTag issuances starting February 1, 2026. The change applies to private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans, aiming to eliminate post-activation hassles, reduce paperwork, and make toll payments smoother and quicker at plazas across the country.
According to official NHAI guidelines, the KYV step – which required vehicle owners to re-submit documents, upload photos, or undergo repeated verification even after FASTag activation – will no longer be mandatory for newly issued tags. This addresses widespread complaints about delays, follow-up calls from banks or customer care, and unnecessary FASTag suspensions despite valid initial submissions.
NHAI FASTag big changes from February 1, 2026
No post-activation KYV required:
For all new FASTags issued on or after February 1, 2026, verification will be completed entirely before activation. Once the tag is live, users can use it immediately without further checks in normal cases.
Stronger pre-activation checks by banks:
Issuer banks will now handle upfront validation using the VAHAN database (mandatory) to confirm vehicle registration details. In exceptional cases, the Registration Certificate (RC) may be used for cross-verification. This shifts verification responsibility to banks, ensuring accuracy at the point of issuance.
KYV only in special cases:
Verification will only be triggered if complaints arise, such as:
– FASTag linked to the wrong vehicle
– Tag found loose or incorrectly affixed
– Suspected misuse or fraud
– Disputes reported at toll plazas
Existing FASTag users unaffected
For current FASTag users, no routine KYV will be required unless irregularities are flagged. This prevents unnecessary disruptions at toll plazas for those with properly issued tags.
Will new rules benefit private car owners?
The reform is expected to significantly reduce the time spent at toll plazas and during FASTag activation. Previously, many users faced repeated KYV requests even after providing valid documents, leading to frustration, tag blacklisting threats, and long queues. By eliminating post-issuance checks, NHAI aims to:
– Minimise paperwork and delays
– Prevent avoidable toll disputes
– Speed up FASTag issuance and activation
– Improve overall user experience on national highways
Note that commercial vehicles (buses, trucks, multi-axle) remain exempt from this relaxation due to higher risk factors. Also, note that FASTag continues to be mandatory for all vehicles on national highways.
NHAI stated that the old KYV process had become redundant and burdensome, especially with improved digital integration via VAHAN. Vehicle owners are advised to ensure their FASTag is linked correctly to their registered mobile number and bank account, and to recharge promptly to avoid blacklisting or double toll charges (for non-FASTag vehicles).
