German luxury car makers Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, and the British Jaguar-Land Rover (JLR) – now a Tata company – showcased their unique offerings at the Auto Expo 2016. JLR launched two of its newest cars sold globally – the all-new XE luxury sedan and the F-Pace crossover – in the Indian market at the Auto Expo 2016. The XE, which was launched globally in 2014, marks Jaguar’s entry into the entry-level luxury sedan segment. It is powered by the company’s new engine family called Ingenium, which includes both petrol and diesel powertrains. The XE has been priced at Rs 39.09 lakh. With the F-Pace, on the other hand, Jaguar enters the Land Rover territory. The F-Pace is a premium SUV, and it was first showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year. The F-Pace, which is already on sale in some European countries, is expected to be launched in India later this calendar year. It will compete with Porsche Cayenne and BMW X6. Interestingly, it will also compete with sibling Land Rover’s Range Rover Sport SUV. Mercedes-Benz India, which has emerged as India’s largest luxury car player in calendar year 2015 – with total sales of 13,502, beating Audi India which sold 11,192 units during the same period – showcased the new generation GLC luxury SUV. The car set to be launched in mid-2016. Interestingly, the GLC SUV (previously GLK) is based on the company’s entry-level luxury sedan, the C-Class, and uses the same underpinnings. The luxury quotient is enhanced by the fact that the GLC’s interiors are inspired by the new S-Class – the most premium car in the company’s portfolio. The GLC will compete with BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Audi India showcased a wide range of luxury cars and it launched in the country the new R8 V10 Plus, which the company claims to be the fastest Audi ever in India. The German car-maker also launched the A8 L Security, a bullet-proof car which, the company claims, meets the most stringent requirements for civilian high-security sedans. The A8 L Security competes with Mercedes-Benz Maybach S600 Guard, which is priced an exorbitant Rs 8.9 crore in India. BMW India launched the premium compact SUV, the X1, which is priced from Rs 29.9 lakh to Rs 39.9 lakh. In addition, the company’s brand ambassador, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, unveiled the new-generation 7-Series. It has been priced between Rs 1.1 crore to Rs 1.5 crore, and is based on the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) Rear Wheel Drive platform. This flagship saloon will be locally assembled at the company’s Chennai facility. (Prices are ex-showroom, Delhi)
