This week, Toyota Kirloskar Motor launched the all-new Camry in India. While the gasoline variant is priced at Rs 28.8 lakh, the Camry Hybrid is priced at Rs 31.92 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Toyota’s flagship sedan in India, the Camry is a luxury car with features similar to a BMW 5-Series or a Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It is powered by a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder petrol engine that produces a peak output of 181 PS and a maximum torque of 233 Nm. The Camry Hybrid, on the other hand, comes with Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) powertrain, which essentially combines the petrol motor with a high-torque electric motor, producing a combined power (engine plus motor) output of 205 PS coupled with a fuel-economy of 19.16 kmpl and carbon-dioxide emissions of 122.8 gm per km of driving—far lesser than the conventional vehicles of similar size.

However, the segment the Camry is in, hasn’t been a comfortable one for automakers in recent times. From six cars in the segment (SIAM calls it Premium) a couple of years, today there are only two—the Camry and the Skoda Superb. The big exits were the Honda Accord, Volkswagen Passat, Nissan Teana and Hyundai Sonata.
