The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is an off-road vehicle, which has been used for years by our police and defence forces. This purpose built 4X4 vehicle is powered by a 1.3 L multi-port fuel injected petrol engine that generates 81 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 Nm at 4,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox with a mechanical 4X4 transfer system that can switch from 2-wheel drive to 4H or 4L as per the terrain in front of the driver. Kerb weight of the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is 985 kg for the soft top and 1020 kg for the hard top which gives this SUV a 'go-anywhere' capability. Owing to its inexpensive maintenance and good off-road capabilities, the Gypsy is recommended and preferred by many off-roaders.
Go anywhere capability with the 4X4 transfer case
Lockable glove compartment keeps all essential items protected while off-roading
Reclining and adjustable front seats give the driver and co-driver to position the seat according to one's preference
The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has a simple and old-school design. Measuring at 4,010 mm in length, 1,540 mm in width and a wheelbase of 1,875 mm for the soft top version and 1,845 mm for the hard top variant, the Gypsy is a manueverable car in traffic. The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy runs on 205/70 section tyres as stock with 15-inch steel rims for extra rigidity during hardcore off-roading. Front and rear suspension setup are a leaf spring with double action damper and booster.
On the inside, the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has a rugged dashboard with a lockable glovebox for securing essentials like car papers, wallet etc while off-roading. The hard-top variant of the SUV also gets fabric upholstery while adjustable front seat head restraints with a vanity mirror on the co-driver mirror and a front package tray are standard offering on both variants. The front seats are comfortable, however the rear jump benches on each side of the SUV are good only for short trips in case there are four adults squeezed into it.
Powering the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is a 1,298cc G13BB multi-port fuel injected 16 valve petrol engine that generates 81 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 Nm at 4,500 rpm. There is no diesel engine, however, the petrol engine is responsive and has a lot of grunt for off-road expeditions.
The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has only one transmission option of a 5-speed manual gearbox with a two-speed transfer constant mesh. The high ratio on the four-wheel-drive is 1:1.409 and the low ratio is 1:2.268.
The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has side impact beams along with a rigid body structure. The vehicle also features a distributor less ignition, which enhances the water-wading capacity. The SUV also has a hydraulic clutch for the cooling fan that turns off the radiator fan when the engine is operating under optimium temprature
The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has an ARAI mileage of 11.96 km/l for the 1.3 L 16 valve petrol engine which is acceptable considering its off-road capability and non-aerodynamic design.
