The popularity of compact crossovers/compact SUVs continues to attract carmakers in India and another new player is making its debut in this segment. Tata Motors will be introducing its first compact crossover, the Nexon before this year's festive season. In a latest development, the first batch of the production model has just been rolled out from the company's facility in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra. The first batch of cars will reach select dealerships soon where potential customers will be able to test drive as well as pay the booking amount. Although bookings haven't commenced yet, they are expected to start by next month according to a Delhi based dealer of Tata Motors. The compact crossover is underpinned by the Tata Tiago/Tigor's platform and carries forward the Indian carmaker's Impact design philosophy. The Nexon will be available with a petrol as well as a diesel engine, both with class-leading power figures. The petrol engine is a 1.2-litre turbocharged Revotron unit that generates 108 hp of power at 3,750 rpm and 260 Nm of torque between 2,000 rpm to 4,000 rpm. The 1.5-litre turbocharged Revotorq diesel mill is an all-new engine developed in-house with inputs from AVL, Mahle, Bosch and Honeywell. It generates the same power and torque as its petrol counterpart, 108 hp and a higher 260 Nm of torque. Both these engines will be available with a 6-speed manual transmission and initially, no automatic gearbox will be offered. Another first-in-segment feature in the Tata Nexon would be different driving modes, Eco, City and Sport which would change the throttle response based on the driver's preference.
The Nexon will be offered with projector headlamps, Daytime Running Lamps, front and rear fog lamps, U-shaped tail lamps, roof rails, rear spoiler and a chrome outlined honeycomb front grille. Some of these features would be restricted only to the top-end trims which would also get a touchscreen infotainment system with steering mounted audio as well as phone controls and a voice recognition system. This system would be supplied by Harman and it would also support navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and other such functionalities a potential buyer would expect from a car of this segment. In addition to the infotainment unit, the Tata Nexon's top trim would also get an automatic climate control as well as a reverse parking camera with sensors.
In terms of safety, the Tata Nexon is expected to be offered with dual front airbags and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution). That's considering the fact that most of the compact SUV/compact crossovers sold in India right now have these basic safety kits. The Tata Nexon is expected to start from Rs 6.5 lakh and go up to Rs 8.5 lakh, ex-showroom and once introduced, it will go up against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Honda WR-V and the Ford EcoSport.
Do watch this space for a review of the Nexon in the last week of this month, followed by a video review, wherein we'll tell you if the Nexon is good enough to take on the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and the Honda WR-V.
