Among passenger vehicles (PV), the Utility vehicles segment saw a growth of 36% on the back of new launches; six launches contributed 43% of sales in May 2016 with Toyota Innova, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Creta stealing the show. The momentum in scooter sales continued.
Toyota Innova was leading in the segemnt in its first full month of sales. Maruti Vitara Brezza and Hyundai Creta came a close second and third.
In cars, Maruti Alto has gained post a mild facelift but still faces pressure from Renault KWID. Maruti’s constrained capacity has been prioritised toward the recently launched Baleno, Vitara Brezza and S-Cross. Consequently, the sale of vehicles priced above Rs 5 lakh now forms 41% (vs. 28% in May'15) of Maruti's sales.
Two-wheeler sales were up 10% since last year, helped by 25% growth in scooters and 19% growth in mopeds.
Honda has regained 59% market share in scooters, last seen in Jul’15.
In scooters, the top 4 brands continue to dominate – Honda Activa, Hero Maestro, Hero Duet and TVS Jupiter – commanding 75% of sales.
With Honda's new Gujrat plant has aiding in increase in supply, Honda has regained 59% market share in scooters after a decline to 51% late last year.
After three consecutive months of consequtive double-digit growth, Motorcycle sales got slow as overall growth stood at 3%, despite eight launches which contributed in 12% of sales. Hero continues to lead with 50.9% market share.
