Japanese car maker, Suzuki launched the new Swift in Japan in 2016, and for the European markets, the company showcased the Swift at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The manufacturer is expected to launch the all new Swift at the 2018 Auto Expo in India. First introduced in 2005, in India under the Maruti Suzuki brand, the hatchback has been the most popular car in its segment. The new Swift is one of the most anticipated models right now as it falls in a growing segment, where it already commands consumer trust. However, the launch is still about a year away in 2018, so will it be worth waiting for the new model or should you just go in for something else? We explain but first let's take a look at what the new Maruti Suzuki Swift might offer.

New Maruti Suzuki Swift front

New Maruti Suzuki Swift Design

The new Maruti Suzuki Swift is based on the HEARTEC platform, which makes the hatchback lighter than the previous Swift as it now weighs 890kg. The new Swift gets a hexagonal grille with chrome inserts, projector headlamps with LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps), LED tail lamps, ORVM's indicator and fog lamps. Along with this, the hatchback features blackened out A, B & C pillars and rides on 15 inch or 16-inch alloy wheels. In addition, the new Swift boot space has been increased by 54 litres as the current generation Swift has a boot space of 316 litres. The rear door handles too are placed on the blacked-out C-pillar. Overall, the new Swift looks sharper and sportier than the present model and despite minimal changes in dimensions, the new model looks significantly wider than the present one.

The all new Maruti Suzuki Swift will be powered by the same 1.2 litre K-Series petrol motor and 1.3 litre DDiS motor mated to a 5-speed manual and CVT transmission. Also, it might get SHVS( Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) technology in order to offer higher fuel-efficiency and take benefit of government incentives for hybrid vehicles. It is expected that the new Swift might also get the 1.0 litre Boosterjet engine which delivers 100hp of power and 150 Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed manual transmission with a 2WD configuration.

New Maruti Swift Dimensions

Dimensionally, the 2018 Swift measures 3,840mm in length, 1,735mm wide, 1,495mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,450mm. The new Swift is 10mm shorter in length, 40mm wider, 35mm lower and has a 20mm longer wheelbase.

New Maruti Suzuki Swift Safety

In terms of safety, the 2018 Swift will get features dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD as standard equipment. Also it will get features such as reverse parking camera, cruise control and rear seat belt pre tensioner.

Should you wait then?

Now that you've read what the new Swift is going to be like, it's clear that the new version is going to be sportier, smarter, safer and more fuel-efficient. In addition, the car will also be quicker and more spacious than the present version and all these qualities combined should continue to appeal to buyers across a wide age range.

If buying a car isn't an immediate requirement and your old car can stretch for a few more months, the new Swift is somewhat worth the wait. If not, it's better to go for the Baleno as the Swift will share may features with the Baleno. The key reason to wait for the Swift in our opinion is of you're a driving enthusiast looking to buy a car in this segment. Although, the company might not offer any new engines, the new Swift is a light car and significantly lighter than the Baleno. Hence, even with the present engines, the new Swift should be a peppy hatchback to drive and might sport the best power-to-weight ratio in its segment.
