Hyundai Santro and Maruti Suzuki Wagon R have both been reintroduced in their new avatars with a new design and features. Competing in the same segment for years, the Santro and Wagon R are both available with factory-fitted CNG kits. Soon after Hyundai Santro's return in India, Hyundai revealed that 21% of total bookings for the 2018 Santro came from its CNG variant. So, which one delivers better fuel economy with a CNG kit? Here's a comparison:
Engine & power
The Santro comes powered by a 1.1-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 68 hp at 5500 rpm and 99 Nm at 4500 rpm. The CNG variant with the same engine produces 58 hp at 5500 rpm and 84 Nm at 4500 rpm.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
The Wagon R comes with two engine options - a 1.0-litre petrol and a 1.2-litre petrol, out of which the CNG kit is available with the 1.0-litre petrol engine option. The petrol variant makes 67 hp at 5500 rpm and 90 Nm at 3500 rpm. The CNG variant makes 58 at 5500 rpm and 78 Nm at 3500 rpm.
Fuel tank capacity
Hyundai Santro CNG comes with a 35-litre fuel tank for petrol and a 60-litre (approximately 10.8 kg) capacity for the CNG. On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R CNG is fitted with a 32-litre tank for petrol and a 60-litre (approximately 10.8 kg) unit for CNG.
While Hyundai Santro CNG delivers 30.48 km/kg of CNG, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R CNG delivers 33.54 km/kg. Both figures are quoted by the manufacturers and may differ in real-world conditions.
Hyundai Santro is available with a CNG kit in the Magna and Sportz at Rs 5.23 lakh and Rs 5.64 lakh, respectively. The 2019 Maruti Suzuki S-CNG was recently launched at a starting price of Rs. 4.84 lakh for LXi and Rs. 4.89 Lakh for LXi (O) variants. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.
