Maruti Suzuki Leopard scare: Engine assembly at Manesar plant shuts down as cat still at large

Maruti Suzuki’s manesar plant spreads over 600 acres and houses 3 fully-integrated plants, with an annual capacity of 5.5 lakh cars.

Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant resumed operations on Thursday and the second shift carried out regular activities at the plant. However, the engine assembly unit which is located inside the Manesar plant continues to remain shut as the leopard scare continues. The big car was captured on CCTV footage at about 4am on Thursday morning and has been causing troubles in the smooth operations of the plant. The area where the engine assembly unit is located has been secured and no major damage to life or property has been reported. The plant did not operate its first shift on Thursday and the workers were not allowed inside the plant, in fact the leopard was first spotted at the factory’s engine department. The search operations and the attempt to normalize things at Maruti Suzuki’s plant have been going on yesterday with forest department officials armed with tranquilizer guns trying to locate the animal on the 400-acre campus. The officials even used firecrackers to rattle the leopard and make it venture out revealing its location, according to a report in The Indian Express.

Images and reports also suggest that the officials from forest department brought goats to the plant in hope that the big cat will be lured towards them. Police officials have been deployed outside the premises to ensure the crowd outside maintains a safe distance and the Forest Department officials are able to carry out their operation without hindrances.

“Police rushed to the spot as soon as we received the information. The premises were immediately evacuated and we have sealed the area. The rescue operation is on and over 100 cops have been deployed at the spot,” said Ashok Bakshi, DCP (South).

Marut Suzuki is still evaluating the loss of production at its Manesar plant due to this incident. Except for the company’s engine plant all other division are operating normally. Maruti Suzuki’s manesar plant spreads over 600 acres and houses 3 fully-integrated plants, with an annual capacity of 5.5 lakh cars. The company along with its partner Suzuki Powertrain manufactures diesel engines. In its current capacity the company manufactures about 3 lakh engines every year and plans are underway to increase the capacity to up to 7 lakh units annually.
