Maruti Suzuki Ciaz overtakes Honda City to become highest selling sedan in India

Maruti Suzuki sold 6,530 units of Ciaz sedan in January, 2017 as compared to 5,431 units in January, 2016, registering a growth of 20.2 percent during the same period in 2016 and 2017. The Ciaz has outnumbered its competitors, especially the Honda City which stood at 6,355 units in January, 2017 corresponding to 8,037 units sold in January, 2016.

Maruti Suzuki has announced the sales of the Ciaz for the month of January, 2017. The company has sold 6,530 units of Ciaz sedan in January, 2017 as compared to 5,431 units in January, 2016, registering a growth of 20.2 percent during the same period in 2016 and 2017.

Based on the market intelligence report, the Ciaz has outnumbered its prime competitor, the Honda City that sold 6,355 units in January, 2017 corresponding to 8,037 units sold in January, 2016. Skoda sold 959 units of the Rapid in January, 2017 and sales of the Czech camaker declined by 8.1 percent as against 1,044 units in January, 2016. Volkswagen witnessed a dip by 61 percent in sales of the Vento which were 543 units in January, 2017 compared to 1,393 units in January, 2016.

Cumulative sales of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz stood at 53,644 units between April 2016 and January 2017. In comparison, Honda Cars India sold 45,395 units of the City between April 2016 and January 2017, registering a growth of 19 percent, while the Hyundai Verna stood at 13,246 units during the period, which grew by 305 percent. Volkswagen and Skoda witnessed a weak demand for the Vento and the Rapid which sold 8,347 units (Volkswagen) and 7,402 units (Skoda) between April 2016 and January 2017.

After the introduction of the Ciaz in October, 2014, the sedan has garnered popularity owing to its aggressive price tag and it has become the best-selling premium mid-size sedan in the country. The Ciaz also crossed one lakh sales mark in the domestic market in June 2016. The Ciaz diesel is the first sedan in its segment that is offered with a mild-hybrid technology, Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) that was introduced in September 2015. The company has equipped the car with optional safety features like dual front airbags and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) on the base variant.
