Maruti Suzuki will introduce the Baleno RS hatchback in the performance hatchback segment which would compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and Fiat Punto Abarth. It was first showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo and the new offering will be offered with the company's new 1.0 litre turbocharged engine, BoosterJet which is expected to generate 111 hp of power. The engine is expected to come only with a 6-speed manual transmission and no automatic transmission for the time being.

Since the Baleno RS is speculated to be offered only on the Alpha variant, it would come with dual front airbags and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution). In terms of convenience, the Baleno RS will have rain sensing wipers, automatic climate control, reverse parking sensors with camera, electrically foldable and adjustable ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirrors) and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This system is expected to also support Android Auto alongside Apple CarPlay as the same will be available in the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Ignis slated for launch on January 13, 2017. Other features in the Baleno RS that would be similar to the Alpha versions currently on sale includes Bi-Xenon projector headlamps with LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps), LED tail lamps, turn indicators on ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirrors) and blackened out A, B as well as C pillars. In addition to these, the Baleno RS would have revised bumpers and black alloy wheels for a sporty appeal. This appeal should be carried forward to the interiors as well with an all-black dashboard and black leatherette seats. Like other premium offerings from Maruti Suzuki, the Baleno RS will be sold through the Nexa dealerships in India.

The Baleno RS will be the first performance-oriented hatchback from Maruti Suzuki in India. Since most components of the Baleno except the BoosterJet engine have already been localised, we expect the Baleno Rs to be priced competitively.
