We have known for a while now that, Mahindra and Mahindra might be considering launching, SsangYong’s Rexton SUV in India at the 2018 Auto Expo. However new information coming out of the Mahindra and Mahindra camp suggests that the Rexton will be launched at this year's Auto Expo but is more likely to have a Mahindra badge, ditching it’s South Korean heritage. While we might have expected Mahindra to go for something more generic like the XUV 700, Mahindra is likely to choose the Rexton name for its full-size SUV. And this is an understandable move coming out of the Mahindra camp considering that SsangYong has actually officially been on sale in India for a while now, the fact that you didn’t know this, justifies Mahindra’s rebranding move even more. Now we are glad that Mahindra chose to bring the Rexton under their wing and spend more on bringing an upmarket vehicle to the forefront rather than spend on marketing a brand that has proven to be difficult in the past.
The Mahindra Rexton is expected to stay largely identical to the car sold globally but could feature cosmetic changes to bring it more in line with Mahindra's design language. Among the tweaks could be a new grille, different alloy wheel designs and some interior trim changes.
We expect, that at least in terms of design the Rexton will be identical to the Rexton sold globally. There may, however, be some minor changes to variable design body panels once it finally shows at the Auto Expo 2018. Parts like the grille, alloy wheels and some interior trim could be tweaked to look more akin to the Mahindra family of vehicles. What will be interesting, however, is to see how Mahindra trim the Rexton’s interiors.Globally the Rexton packs a 9.2-inch HD touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 360-degree camera, a 7.0-inch LCD instrument cluster, cooled seats, Nappa leather upholstery and a smart tailgate. Now what is more important is that Mahindra is planning to undercut the Fortuner by a pretty handsome 4 lakh. Which means that it would be closer to Isuzu’s MU-x price of 24 lakh.
Now while technical specs are likely to be the same as the global variant, some minor changes to tuning can be expected once it does break cover at the Auto Expo. However, the Rexton G4 or the Mahindra Rexton is likely to be powered by a 2.2-litre diesel, that makes 187hp and 420Nm, mated to a seven-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox sourced from Mercedes-Benz.
