Indian automaker, Mahindra owned Italian designing firm, Pininfarina has finalised a contract with a Vietnamse carmaker VinFast to develop cars and SUVs specific to Vietnam. Pininfarina will develop two cars (hatchbacks) and one sedan and SUV each. While the cost of this deal is still unknown, the two cars to be developed by Mahindra owned Pininfarina have been voted as the best designs on cars by the Vietnamese market in a poll conducted by VinFast - “VinFast car vote contest” held in October 2017 before giving out the contract to the Italian firm.
The vote consisted of 20 concept designs submitted by world-famous design houses including Pininfarina, Vinfast took it to its customers to decide which car design they like and is both “in line with world trends” and fitting with “Vietnamese tastes and demand”. The pole received over 62,000 responses and a majority of them voted for Pininfarina, thus VinFast awarded the contract to Pininfarina.
“The direct involvement of Pininfarina, one of the world’s biggest design brand, is expected to bring modern beauty while retaining Vietnamese identity to the first two VinFast car models”, said Quang Viet Nguyen, Vice President of Vingroup.
VinFast is a part of VinGroup that is one of the biggest companies in Vietnam and expects the first car to roll out in September 2019. The company aims to initially manufacture between 100,000 and 200,000 Vinfast-branded vehicles annually. This will include sedans, seven-seater SUVs. VinFast also plans to venture into two-wheelers and has confirmed the introduction of electric motorcycles. VinFast hopes to sell 5 lakh cars in Vietnam by 2025.

Mahindra acquired Pininfarina in 2015 and globally the company is also working on introducing an electric car to rival the likes of Tesla. While the details on this are still under wraps, Mahindra said that the possibility of bringing that car to India is limited as India is not a developed car market. So expect a global introduction by the end of 2018. At the Auto Expo 2018, the company has already showcased its new Mahindra badged G4 Rexton SUV along with a range of electric vehicles. Expect Mahindra to be aggressive in rolling out new products in 2018.
