When FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) announced that they will introduce a locally assembled premium SUV for India, all eyes were set on them until the unveil of the Compass. Now, according to a dealership in Delhi, bookings of the premium SUV have started with a token amount of Rs 50,000 and is expected to launch by 16th or 17th June. The dealership also confirmed that the starting price of the Compass will range between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 22 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. The American carmaker started the production of the Compass this month from its Ranjangaon facility and FCA has invested $280 million for the development of the Compass in India.
The Jeep Compass will be powered by a 1.4-litre Multiair petrol engine and a 2.0-litre diesel engine. The petrol engine will generate 160 hp of power and 250 Nm of torque while the diesel engine will produce a little more than 170 hp of power and 350 Nm of torque. As per the dealership, the petrol engine will be available only with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox, while the diesel motor will be mated only to a six-speed manual transmission.
The petrol manual and diesel automatic versions will join the portfolio later. Higher versions of the Compass should also be available with an all-wheel drive system with four modes, Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud. In terms of dimensions, the Compass measures 4,410 mm in length, 1,820 mm in width, 1,640 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,630 mm.
The design cues of the Compass have been taken from other Jeep models sold in India, the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler. Equipment list on the first India-made premium SUV from Jeep will include projector headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs), LED tail lamps and black 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside the cabin, it is expected to get a 7-inch touch screen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with steering mounted audio and phone controls. Once introduced, the Jeep Compass is expected to compete with the Mahindra XUV5OO, Tata Hexa and the likes.
