Vehicle maintenance is important, but this is also a big scam and an easy way for many service centres to make money. While some jobs are important that you do at the service centre, a few can be avoided there and can be done by a professional outside the service centre. Here are some car service centre scams to avoid, part 2.
Wheel alignment
One of the most commonly asked questions is about wheel alignment when servicing a vehicle. While this may seem to be part of the process, you are better off doing it elsewhere, since most service centres take the vehicle to a third party to check for alignment, and at times, it is not done but charged. So when wheel alignment comes into question, opt out and get it done with a specialist directly so you get to know the information first-hand and you are also aware of the condition of the tyres.
Additives for the engine oil and fuel
This is another way most service centres make money, recommending additives to be used with the engine oil and fuel — opt out. Carmakers design engines to run without any additives to be used with the oil or fuel because the engine oil and fuel have the necessary additives to make an engine run at its best.
Detailing and polishing
This is another service to opt out of an authorised service centre and seek professional help. Vehicle detailing and polishing is a massive industry and there are products designed for certain vehicles, paint, and usage. The same money spent for a generic polish done at a service centre can be used to get a professional job done.
Accessories
The accessories game is a massive market. Often, service centres will try to sell you accessories and if you do like something, always get a quote from outside and often, these will be much lower than what an OEM has quoted. Also, if something has to be installed that requires wiring, get a professional to do the job.
