Even before it is officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2017, images of the brand new BMW X2 have surfaced on the web. The set of images released by Highsnobiety feature the X2 with a camouflage wrap and appear no less than an official photo shoot. It was first seen at the Paris Motor Show 2016 as a concept, post which we reported about identical patent sketches that surfaced last month. The latest pictures, however, is the closest look at the X2 nearing production. It sports a traditional BMW design, but with a few new touches, such as the inverted kidney grilles and BMW logos on both the C-pillars. The X2 will essentially be a crossover that will deliver on a limited level of off-road driving.
The X2 is to be the X1's sister car, a lot like the X4 (available internationally) slots itself as a more dynamic take on the X3 and the X6, while being more performance oriented than the X5. The X2 codenamed F49, will be based on the largely dynamic UKL platform, the same platform underpinning the X1 and the Mini Countryman.
Although BMW has not mentioned anything about when or if the X2 is arriving in India, we expect it to on top of BMW's priority list, especially considering how much this part of the world loves crossovers. The X2 will make it to showrooms globally by 2018 courtesy their primary plant in Germany.
Engine lineup for the X2 will include a range the three- and four-cylinder units displacing 1.5L and 2.0L, respectively. The top of the line BMW X2 M35i is likely to come with an M-fettled 2.0L turbo engine that makes 296 bhp. Transmission options would include 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic and an 8-speed automatic. BMW’s X Drive AWD system may be made available as standard on select models.
