This year’s Concours d’Elegance was special for BMW as the company used this iconic car show at Pebble Beach to unveil the new generation BMW Z4 roadster. The new roadster that was revealed is still a concept and the new aggressive design and proper proportions will make it to the production version as well. BMW Concept Z4 gets a dynamic silhouette with large kidney shaped grille, front bumper with huge air-intakes and overall the design impresses and follows the BMW VISION NEXT 100 design philosophy. BMW Z4 will go into production next year and that’s when the production model will be revealed but expects it to be very similar to this BMW Z4 Concept. “The BMW Concept Z4 in an all-out driving machine,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “Stripping the car back to the bare essentials allows the driver to experience all the ingredients of motoring pleasure with supreme directness. This is total freedom on four wheels.” BMW Concept Z4 has been co-developed with the 2018 Toyota Supra (Coupe-only) which is also expected to hit the global markets in 2018. BMW Concept Z4 is the BMW Group’s vision of an ideal modern roadster “The BMW Concept Z4 expresses the new BMW design language from all perspectives and in all details. From the dynamic-looking front to the striking flanks to the clean-cut tail end: a few lines and the subtle interplay between surfaces are enough to generate a sense of power and emotion,” adds van Hooydonk.

Now the new roadster does follow the classical roadster design cues, such as a long wheelbase, a low-slung, stretched silhouette and a compact rear end. The concept Z4 gets shorter bonnet than the previous generation Z4 and crisp overhangs ensure the driver sits closer to the centre of the car than in previous BMW roadsters. This has lead to getting new proportions to enhance sporty and agile feel.  It features large domes stretching out rearwards from the cabin integrating the function of rollover bars and provide a sporting conclusion to the low-to-the-road silhouette at the rear.

If reports are to be believed then both Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 will get a hybrid engine that will combine the power from both petrol and electric motor built by BMW. It will be powered by a four-wheel drive engine and the electric motor will help to improve the acceleration of the respective cars. BMW has also confirmed that Z4 will get rear-drive with regular petrol engine too. Reports suggest that the platform of the car will be shared by both BMW and Toyota and is built by BMW after the company was successful in building a light-weight platform by using aluminum and carbon-fibre which is used in its BMW i8.  BMW concept Z4 gets 20-inch light-alloy wheels.

The chemistry between the interior and exterior of the BMW Concept Z4 is evident in both forms and colour scheme. On the inside, BMW has given a three-dimensional character and adopts the colour of the car body, creating a clear visual link between the interior and exterior. The instrument cluster and central information display form a cluster of screens that are integrated into the driver’s cockpit. The two displays are now positioned at almost the same height and in close proximity to one another, which gives the impression of a single, cohesive unit. It also features a head-up display giving key driving information within the driver’s direct field of view.
