The Indian Automobile representative body, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Monday announced that the overall auto industry has registered an overall growth of 10% in the domestic sector as the industry (across segments) sold a total of 2,49,034 units last month as against 2,263,620 units sold in September 2016. In the period between July-September 2017 the passenger vehicle industry that includes cars, SUVs and vans in the Indian market saw total sales of over 1.63 million units. Commercial vehicles saw total domestic sales of 3.53 lakh and two-wheeler sales registers 10.50 million units.
The domestic sales of passenger cars have gone up by 11.32% as the car industry dominated by SUV sales sold 309,955 units in the Indian market. However, declining exports have had an adverse effect on overall production. Production of cars, SUVs and vans declined by 0.44% to 343,437 units.
The second quarter (April-Sept) that ended last month registered the same of passenger vehicles grow by 9.16% over the same period last year. Over 1.63 million units of cars, SUVs and vans (combined) were sold in the Q2 of 2017-18.
Commercial vehicles had a good month of September by selling 77,195 units (LCV + M&HCV) and posting a growth of 25.27% over the sales in September 2016. In the Q2 the commercial vehicle sales in the domestic market grew almost by 6% by selling 353,342 units. This includes 224,657 units of the light commercial vehicle and 128,685 units of medium & heavy commercial vehicles.
The two-wheeler sales heavily dominated by scooter sales saw sales of about 2.49 million in the domestic market. This includes over 6.86 lakh units of scooters, 12.69 lakh units of Two-wheelers and 84,934 units of mopeds. The second quarter saw two-wheeler sales growing by 10.14% with over 10 million Two-wheelers sold in last three months. The industry sold a total of 10.50 million Two-wheelers as against 9.53 million in Q2 of FY 2016-17. This includes 3.57 million units of scooters, 6.50 million units of motorcycles and 4.20 lakh units of mopeds.
Thanks to Two-wheelers and three-wheeled the over automobile exports in Q2 grew by 10.71%. two-wheeler and three-wheeled segments registered a growth of 15.22 % and 19.42% respectively. While passenger and commercial vehicles segment degree by 1.34% and 28.53% respectively over the same period last year. Overall about 1.94 million units of vehicles were exported on the second quarter in the ongoing financial year.
