Arnold Schwarzenegger, hear this name and what comes to mind is a mean-looking Terminator thirsty for human life, big muscles and gas-guzzlers like the Hummer. What does not relate to this iconic personality is the word 'environmentalist'. But the Austrian-born former professional bodybuilder turned actor, turned politician does, in fact, have a huge interest in clean energy, something which was very evident in his legislative agenda as a two-term governor of California. And now, Arnold seems to have turned one of his prized possessions into an Eco-friendly car, a one-of-a-kind electric Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen. The electric Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen was featured on the latest episode of 'Jay Leno's Garage'. Now valued at $1 million, the 2016 G-Wagen was modified by Austrian car customizer Kreisel Electric.
The two Hollywood legends are seen discussing the new specs of the reinvented SUV, while Schwarzenegger goes onto to explain that the G-Wagen has maintained its 500 horses and now even lighter. "It's now 2,900 kilos. With the gas engine, it was 3,400 kilos."
If you're Arnold Schwarzenegger, the best way to figure out how much weight your customised car has lost is not by asking the customizer but, how he puts it: "The way you figure it out is, you just go underneath and bench press the whole thing."
The loss of weight has helped the G-Wagen gain some speed as well. It now has faster acceleration going from 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, which is three seconds quicker than when it had the factory engine.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen is apparently only the first SUV of the list of others Arnold wants to have transformed by Kreisel Electric. He's also having the engineers convert one of his Hummers into an all-electric version. Arnold wants his environmental efforts to not only inform consumers but also hopes that politicians must bring saving the environment high on their agendas.
"There's no Republican air or Democratic air. We all breathe the same air," says Schwarzenegger.
