2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift vs new Hyundai i20 facelift vs Maruti Suzuki Baleno: Which car to buy? Price and specs

Not that the 2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift and new Hyundai i20 facelift have been launched in India, here's how the two compete wi the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Compared in terms of specs, price, the three win their fields based on buyers' requirements.

The recently launched new Maruti Suzuki Swift has already gained momentum in the market owing to its popularity as a driver's car. However, it is a much talked about topic among auto enthusiasts, that the competition for the Swift is within the brand - Maruti Suzuki Baleno. And now, Hyundai i20 facelift has also been launched in India at the Auto Expo 2018. So, the Swift now faces direct competition from two cars - Hyundai i20 and Baleno. While Baleno offers better space, the Swift has better performance on its side, and the i20 promises sharper design. How do these three compete in terms of design, engine, and features, we'll find out:


2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift

Maruti Suzuki Swift has an all-new design which is a lot more aerodynamic than the previous model. But the design and styling are brand new, it still retains its signature Swift appeal. It looks more modern and premium with its wraparound windscreen, hexagonal grille with chrome inserts, projector headlamps with LED DRLs, LED tail lamps, ORVMs indicator and fog lamps.

Hyundai Elite i20 facelift

The overall silhouette and dimensions of the 2018 Hyundai i20 facelift remain the same compared to the previous model, however, the front end has been changed. The new Hyundai i20 now comes with a new front grille similar to the one in the current generation Hyundai Xcent, but with a honeycomb pattern. It gets new headlamps DRLs and projectors along with fog lamps in the bumper. At the rear, the i20 facelift gets a new bumper and new taillights.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

Maruti Suzuki Baleno's front end houses a swept-back headlamp unit with LED DRLs and chrome lining on the grille. The Baleno has a prominent shoulder line and a contemporary tail-gate. It features chunky wheel arches and rides on 16-inch 12-spoke alloy wheels with 195/55 section tyres on the top variant. It gets chrome door handles on the Zeta, Zeta AT and Alpha variants which add to the premium appeal.


Maruti Suzuki Swift

The new Maruti Suzuki Swift is powered by two engine options - a 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel units, that produce 81 hp and 113 Nm of torque, and 75 hp and 190 Nm of torque, respectively. The company has assured that the new Swift will be delivering 28.4 kmpl in the diesel variant and 22 kmpl in the 1.2-litre petrol unit, which is an increase of about 8% compared to the older version.

Hyundai Elite i20 facelift

2018 Hyundai i20 comes with two engine options – a 1.2-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel engine. According to Hyundai, the new i20 facelift will deliver an improved mileage of 9 percent. The petrol engine puts out 82 hp of power and 114 Nm of torque and is paired with a 5-Speed manual transmission, with the option of an automatic gearbox. The diesel engine of Hyundai i20 produces 89 hp of power and 220 Nm of torque and is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. 2018 Hyundai i20 has a claimed mileage of 19.0 kmpl in the petrol trims and 22.4 kmpl in diesel.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

Maruti Suzuki Baleno is powered by a 1248cc diesel engine that makes 190 Nm of torque and 74 hp, and a 1197cc petrol engine that makes 83 hp and 115 Nm of torque. The petrol engine is paired to a five-speed manual or a CVT.


Maruti Suzuki Swift

The 2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift has a new infotainment system that features Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The new Swift also features a rear parking camera and improved air conditioning performance. The overall feel of the new Swift's interior is certainly more premium than before, now and features a sporty flat-bottom steering wheel, instead of a standard one.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift has a larger boot than the previous model, which had boot space of 316 litres, and has now been increased by 54 litres. In terms of safety, the all-new Swift comes fitted with ABS, EBD and ISOFIX mounts as standard.

Hyundai Elite i20 facelift

Hyundai i20 facelift has a cabin much more premium than the outgoing model, with some upgrades to the dashboard. It gets a new 17.77 cm touchscreen infotainment system that features Apple Car Play and Google Android Auto. The top variants of the new i20 get new seats and steering mounted controls. Hyundai Auto Link that debuted with the new gen Hyundai Verna, is also equipped in the new i20. It also features rear AC vents like the old model.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno's interior features an all-black theme, including the dashboard, seats and door panels. For added convenience, the front footwell, luggage compartment and glovebox are illuminated. The Baleno's top trim Alpha in the petrol and diesel engine options comes with a touchscreen infotainment system featuring Bluetooth connectivity. It also has Apple CarPlay that mirrors the phone screen of any connected Apple iPhone. Maruti Suzuki Baleno comes with ABS and dual front airbags as standard across all variants.


2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift turns out to be the most affordable hatchback out of the three. The base version of the new Swift retails at Rs 4.99 lakh and Rs 8.29 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top variant. Hyundai i20 facelift has been launched at a price tag of Rs 5.34 lakh for the base trim and Rs 9.15 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top of the line version. Maruti Suzuki Baleno is priced at Rs 5.47 lakh for the base variant and Rs 8.64 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top trim.

While these factors play an essential role in deciding which car to bring home, all of it boils down to what the buyer expects from his/her car. If you're looking for better space and in cabin comfort, you could opt for the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. If the focus is more on what the car is like to drive, the 2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift is a great option.

Based on the Heartect platform, the new Swift is lighter and hence more agile. It lives up to its driver's car personality. If the focus, however, is on sharper styling and better build quality, the Hyundai i20 makes a great family car.
