The desire to own an affordable SUV has seen a major shift in customer preferences from wanting to own a sub-4-meter sedan to now owning a sub-4-meter SUV. In true sense, this paradigm shift started almost five years back with the launch of Ford Ecosport in 2013. It was the first ever sub-4-meter SUV launched in India and since then the segment has been growing a double digit growth. Every major auto-maker now has sub-compact SUV in its product portfolio and the segment has ensured constant sales and resulted in higher profits for car makers in India. Ford Ecosport led the way in the sub-compact SUV space which is now dominated by the market leader with its Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. Recently, Honda Cars India too quickly got in the Honda WR-V and is currently the top-selling car in its portfolio and last to enter the segment was Tata Motors with the Tata Nexon SUV. With the new facelift launched in the market, the competition in this space is going to be both exciting and fierce as never before. Ford Ecosport will try and take on the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza while both Honda WR-V and Tata Nexon will remain top-selling SUVs for their respective companies.

Here’s how the four SUVs chart out on paper.

Design and dimensions:

The dimensions of all the four cars are almost similar, for obvious reasons the length of the vehicles have cut down to make it sub-4-meter so there is not much difference in the length. The difference lies in the width and height of all four SUVs. Both 2017 Ford Ecosport and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza stand tall but the Ecosport is taller than Vitara Brezza but not wider. Tata Nexon is the widest SUV in this segment in order to increase the overall cabin space but has lost out on height which has slightly reduced the look and feel of an SUV. Never the less Tata Nexon has managed to strike a great impressions and viewers response on our comparison video between Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza gives us a sense that the SUV doesn’t remind them of the old traditional Tata products and has been appreciated throughout. However on paper, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza has the right height and width giving it a proper SUV stance with its boxy design and this is challenged in a big way earlier by Tata Motors and now by Ford India.

The new refreshed 2017 Ford Ecosport without a doubt is a better looking model and carries an aggressive design look that one needs in this category. The new front grille makes the face looks bold and definitely gives a complex to its rivals. Once the new Ford Ecosport makes its market debut in India, the Vitara Brezza will be the oldest SUV in this segment and the design on Tata Nexon, Honda WR-V and Ford Ecosport will give a complex to market leader.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza also currently misses out on the petrol engine variant. We expect the Maruti Suzuki to launch the petrol version sooner than later and in the next facelift we might see the Vitara Brezza with a powerful 1.6L diesel engine that once powered the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross but the timelines on this is not confirmed by the company. 2017 Ford Ecosport will also get the 1.5L petrol engine, the most powerful in the segment but the company will now discontinue the 1L ecoboost engine on its small SUV.

Infotainment system:
Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment technology will debut on the new Ford Ecosport and will replace the button heavy dash of Ecosport which will change the entire look and feel of the cabin. It now features a touchscreen infotainment system that supports both Apple Car Play and Android Auto along with mobile navigation. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Tata Nexon too offer the same but Honda WR-V does miss out on these features but does support Honda Connect technology.

The new 2017 Ford Ecosport has been priced aggressively especially the diesel variants and Ford has just under cut the prices when compared with Maruti Suzuki Vitatra Brezza but has not undercut the prices of petrol versions when compared to Tata Nexon or Honda WE-V. Tata Nexon will remain the most affordable SUV in this competitive segment.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza scores the most on practicality but the new SUVs are certainly going to create a lot of noise and might eat up some of the sales of the market leader. Tata Nexon is already winning hears specially of young first time SUV buyers and the aggressive pricing has allowed Tata Motors to stay ahead in the competition. The 2017 Ford Ecosport will be a truly drivers SUV and the new look and engines will certainly help to increase its sales as the Ecosport has been one of the best performing models for Ford in India.
