2018 Honda Goldwing launched at a price of Rs 26.85 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi): All new and Rs 2 lakh cheaper than its predecessor

The 2018 Honda Goldwing is now lighter, more agile, more kit and somehow two-lakh cheaper than the outgoing model, not to mention that it comes with a reverse gear, is this the most well-rounded cruiser on sale today?

The 2018 Honda Goldwing made its global debut less than a month ago at the 2018 Tokyo motor show, and straight up we knew that Honda had changed the game. What makes this interesting is that Honda Motorcycles and Scooter India has announced bookings for the 2018 edition open from today at Honda Wing World dealerships in Mumbai and Delhi, with deliveries beginning in January. A full two months ahead of the 2018 Auto Expo which we had pegged for the Gold Wing’s debut in the sub-continent. Honda has been on and on about how technically advanced the new Goldwing is, and how much better it is to ride than the previous edition, so it should be more expensive than the outgoing model, right? Well, wrong, while the previous Goldwing retailed between 29-32 lakhs (ex-showroom) the new Honda Goldwing has been launched at 26.85 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) a little more than 2 lakhs cheaper than the previous one. How Honda has done this is greek to me, but hey, more kit and two-lakhs cheaper, yes! please. Well, something you should really consider if you have been looking at the Harley CVO or even the Indian Chieftain.

Now this kit we have been on about, powering the 2018 Honda Goldwing is a new compact straight-six 1.8-litre horizontally opposed motor, which will feature four valves per cylinder. In terms of output, this translates to 125hp at as low as 5500 rpm and 170 Nm of torque, which the gigantic behemoth needs to keep rolling on the road. Honda insists that this motor changes the entire character of the motorcycle which will still be the king of the long-flats but also be a wholly dynamic motorcycle as well in terms of sportiness. Transferring the power to the wheels will be a 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox. The interesting bit is that while the DCT will help make the Goldwing more-livable if you consider its mass, it will get a special low-speed “Walking” mode and a reverse gear which was something of the Goldwings Achilles heel.

Honda have even reworked the Chassis making it 2 kilos lighter than its predecessor, the new die-cast aluminium chassis twin beam frame is stiffer as well. Damping and suspension will be done using a new double wishbone front suspension, which reduces friction in comparison to a traditional telescopic setup. The rear springs gets 4 settings which can be tuned through the new 7 inch colour TFT screen.
