The era of the largest automakers from around the world showcasing their achievements in developing more and more refined engines at automotive shows like LA Auto Show or Auto Expo 2018, is quite fading away now. The focus is now shifting towards finding alternative fuel or doing away with the combustion engine altogether, considering the deteriorating situation of the environment. Hence, automobile giants like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Hyundai and new entrants like Tesla and several others are all working towards developing better tech to incorporate electric motors instead of traditional engines, bringing the emissions down to zero. Auto Expo 2018 is now only some days from away, and one thing we know for sure is that the expo this year will have a huge focus on electric powertrains. Hence, following is what you can expect from Tata, Maruti Suzuki, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Hyundai:

Tata Tigor Electric

Tata Motors is lining up several products at the Auto Expo 2018, but one will certainly interest a lot of people will likely be the Tata Tigor Electric. Tata Tigor electric car made headlines in 2017 when Tata bagged an EESL contract for 10,000 cars. And now, the electric Tata Tigor will make its debut in full production spec at the Auto Expo 2018. The electric Tigor was priced at around Rs 11 lakh, which sounds like much, but then if you consider the low-maintenance and absence of fuel bills, it is a recoverable cost in the long run.

In terms of design, the Tata Tigor electric vehicle will be identical to the standard Tigor sub-compact sedan, but with an illuminated EV badge on the grille. The traditional engine has been replaced with a 45 bhp electric motor from the Electra EV. The electric Tigor's range will be around 120 km, which is also at par with the Mahindra E-Verito. The 2018 Auto Expo will allow Tata Motors to gauge public interest in their electric vehicles. Besides the electric Tigor, Tata will be showcasing a total of six electric vehicles at the 2018 Auto Expo.

Hyundai Ioniq

Showcased at the Eco-Friendly Zone at the Auto Expo 2018 will be Hyundai Ioniq, which is the world's first car to come in three electrified versions - hybrid, plug-in and all-electric. Hyundai Ioniq is based on an all-new platform that is optimised to deliver responsive handling and still offering high efficiency with all three powertrains. The fully-electric (EV) version is powered by a high capacity lithium-ion battery.

Other than hardcore automotive products, Hyundai will also focus on customer engagement with nine experiential zones for Auto Expo 2018 – an Eco-friendly zone that will showcase the Ioniq EV, a Mobility zone where the N-badged car will be displayed, a Robotics zone to showcase Hyundai’s technology, the Kona zone for the Kona SUV, an Award zone to commemorate the carmaker’s anniversary, a Sports Zone, a Kids Zone, a Road safety zone and a Jai Ho zone, which will have all of Hyundai’s current India product line.

Mahindra 'Future of Mobility'

For the 2018 Auto Expo, Mahindra & Mahindra has opted a theme called 'Future of Mobility', which will include a showcase of electric cars, SUVs and new concepts. Mahindra has confirmed that a total of six electric vehicles will at the Auto Expo 2018. Being the only electric car maker in India, Mahindra has been developing a new electric car platform for years now.

Mahindra's six 'Future of Mobility’ EVs will be based on three pillars of Clean, Connected & Convenient (3Cs), of which two will be futuristic concepts.

Suzuki e-Survivor

Suzuki e-Survivor, an all-electric SUV concept, will be showcased at the Auto Expo 2018. First unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, Suzuki e-Survivor is said to be an electric four-wheel-drive. The Suzuki e-Survivor concept has a two-seat layout and an open top roof.

While finer details about the e-Survivor are yet to be known, the concept that was unveiled in Japan had high ground clearance, big wheel arches, and large wheels to enable off-roading. Time will tell if the production version of the Suzuki e-Survivor will be like the concept, especially because keeping the weight low will be a challenge for Suzuki.

BMW i3

BMW will be launching its second i series car in India at the Auto Expo 2018 – the BMW i3. BMW i8 was launched in India in 2015, and now BMW is expanding its electric car lineup in the country. The i3 will be powered by 94Ah motor which generates 167.6 hp of power and 250 Nm of torque. When launched, the i3 is expected to be priced around the Rs 1 crore mark.

Mercedes-Benz EQ Concept

Mercedes-Benz EQ electric SUV concept will also be on display at the 2018 Auto Expo, which will be the first electric vehicle to get the three-pointed star. The EQ will be powered by two electric motors, although that is all that is known about the Mercedes EV. Aside from such essential vehicles, Mercedes stall will also be displaying the Mercedes-AMG Formula One car as well as the AMG GT-R and the AMG GLC 43 Coupe.
