The direct-to-home (DTH) project of ASC Enterprises, promoted by Zee, has got the government clearance but will need to give a bank guarantee of Rs 40 crore.

According to company officials, ASCs DTH will roll out before October. The company had earlier claimed that the project would be implemented on August 15. Government officials estimated that ASC would roll out only by early next year.

Prasar Bharatis Ku band project worth Rs 500-crore, targeted at remote areas where cable TV doesnt reach, is also expected to begin sometime next year. After a clearance from the finance ministry, the government is in the process of finalising the project details for Cabinet approval.

Zee network put the total cost of its DTH and CAS projects at Rs 400 crore. On the availability of boxes, officials said some have already arrived and more are being shipped, without giving numbers. Estimates of a market size for DTH are being worked out.

DTH refers to distribution of TV channels direct to the subscribers home, with the help of a pizza-sized dish and a set-top box. Theres no need for an intermediary such as a cablewallah for DTH.
