RedmiPowered by 1.6 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with Cortex-A7 core, the performance of the phone is just right.
First, a trade fact. This week, as many as 40,000 units of Xiaomi MI Redmi 1S got sold instantly when the mid-range smartphone was put on sale on Flipkart and the time it took to vanish has been officially revealed as blink-and-you-miss 4.5 seconds. The good news is that Xiaomi, which started the flash sale trend with the MI 3, has announced that it will again start the sale on September 16 on Flipkartso if you want to buy this phone, better get yourself registered.

But what does MI stand for It is short for Mobile Internet. However, it also has other meaningsone of which is Mission Impossible, because upon establishing Xiaomi, there were many barriers in front of the company and it seemed quite impossible at the time that Xiaomi would become one of the leading smartphone manufacturers in the world!

So, is the MI Redmi 1S that good a phone to attract that many buyers Well, it depends on the way you look at the phone.

Powered by 1.6 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with Cortex-A7 core, the performance of the phone is just right. Plus, with the Adreno 305 image processor, you can explore immersive 3D game environments or enjoy your favourite shows in HD. Then there is the 8 GB flash memory, which means decent, but not ample, space for apps, music, videos and photos. The 4.7-inch display is good too. The phone gets in-plane switching (IPS) technology that delivers nice colour from almost any viewing angle. Further, you get a WCDMA slot for 3G data and GSM slot for 2G data. The rear camera is 8-megapixel which is decent enough to click photos, but not really good in low-light conditions. The front camera, 1.6-megapixel, similarly, is not very clear for taking great and sharp selfies, but, as we found out, it works well as far as video chatting is concerned. Watching movies on this phone is an average experiencewhile colour reproduction is not first-rate, the audio output is just about adequate. However, while using a headphone, the audio output improves and the sound is quite clearthe company claims that audio output adapts to the type of headphones you are using to make sure you always get the best possible performance, and we believe this.

The phone is packed with a number of useful features. For example, you get a gyroscope, compass, ambient noise reduction mic, proximity sensor, Wi-Fi direct, accelerometer, SD card slot (maximum 64 GB) and Bluetooth 4.0.We used the phone for about a week and it did not hang even while using multiple applications. Neither did any of the buttons stall while usage.

The best thing about this phone is its price. For Rs 5,999 currently, it is good value for money. So, is the MI Redmi 1S that good a phone to attract that many buyers As I said, it depends on the way you look at it. At this price, the MI Redmi 1S falls into a very affordable category and thats the reason people are flocking to buy it. But here I must add that because the name Xiaomi has become so popular in India, the company might as well brand the name Xiaomi somewhere on the phonebelieve me, it will add a lot of value. And value is what consistently sells.

Estimated street price: Rs 5,999
