Recent rain and hailstorm brought downward production estimates for wheat by one million tonne to 74.05 million tonne for 2004-05, a top official said. We were expecting 76 million tonne production for wheat this year, but settled at 74.05 million tonne after factoring all possible implicit impact including recent spell of rain and hailstorm, agriculture secretary Radha Singh said at the release of third advanced crop estimates.
The projected wheat production figures during 2004-05 is 2.69% higher than the last years production of 72.11 million tonne. Recent spell of rain and hailstorm in parts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh had affected wheat output prospect to some extent, she added. The second advanced estimate had put the wheat production at 73.03 million tonne for 2004-05.
