Why have you so abruptly decided to end your Test career
West Indies cricket is under a new dispensation and is heading in a new direction. And after speaking to the selectors I got a feeling that my service would be no longer required in the process of regeneration. I had to take a decision, and this is a decision I thought long and hard about. My wife would be happier as this allows me to stay at home longer.
Is it a decision taken in haste and anger
No, I dont have any ill feeling towards anybody. When I got the message that I no longer figure in the scheme of things as far as Test cricket is concerned, I had to accept that. The team was in complete disarray when I was given the job four years ago. Im proud of what Ive contributed to the team as a captain. Ill for ever be thankful to the people who gave me that opportunity. Ill be thankful to the fans who have been fantastic throughout, and also to the team mates and coach Ottis Gibson with whom I forged a strong friendship.
Has the IPL given players enough security to decide their future on their own terms
Every player wants to play in the IPL. Its an opportunity for the players to showcase their talent on a big stage. As for my case, I spoke to my family members at length (before taking the call). West Indies cricket wants to move in a new direction, so I decided to move on. But I agree that the IPL has given the players a kind of security which was not there about half a decade ago.
Are you surprised that Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been bowling so well at the death
Bhuvi has always been a terrific bowler with his ability to move the ball both ways. He is keeping it pretty simple and has been executing his yorkers well. The batting improvisations notwithstanding, yorker remains the best option for a bowler in the final overs.
What about Shikhar Dhawan as a captain
Shikhar has been doing very well. The team environment is such that even Dale Steyn doesnt mind taking feedbacks from a youngster. Also, weve a lot of leaders here. Shikhar never walks alone.
