After gaining a strong foothold in the Indian consumer electronics and home appliances markets, Samsung India Electronics, the Indian subsidiary of Korean electronics major Samsung, is trying to further improve its position in the market through digital convergence. Samsung Indias vice-president (sales) Mr R Zutshi spoke to The Financial Express about the companys plans in India. Excerpts

How successful has the digital focus been at Samsung
With Samsungs strength in terms of global leadership in semi-conductors and thrust on R&D, we are seeking to establish our leadership in the digital convergence era. In keeping with our digital focus we are introducing contemporary, leading technology products. For instance, we have introduced 100 hertz flat and projection TVs in the Indian market, DVD players and hi-end Side by Side refrigerators among other things.

Has the digital focus helped you generate additional volumes
This year, we are expecting the contribution from flat TVs to be over 12 per cent of our total CTV volume. That is we are expecting to sell over one lakh flat TVs this year. In terms of refrigerators, our hi-end (over 400 litre capacity refrigerators) products are expected to contribute over 30 per cent to our total frost-free refrigerator sales this year.

How is Samsung different from others in terms of using the digital technology
Our endeavour is to provide customers features that are unique to Samsung products. For example, the twin cooling technology or the HM cycle in refrigerators is Samsungs patented technology worldwide. Likewise, the Bio Ceramic Enamel cavity in microwaves is again Samsungs patented technology and its USP.

What is the focus of Samsung after the success of CTVs in the first half
In the second half, we expect to optimise CTV sales during the festival season as well as continue with our focus on flat and projection TVs. In overall terms, this year we are looking at selling eight lakh CTVs in the domestic market and exporting two lakh CTVs.
