In his first direct reaction to RSS chief KS Sudarshans statement that the party should be headed by the next generation of leaders, BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee surprised everyone by agreeing with the view that both he and party president LK Advani should make way for younger leaders.

Choosing the first day of the Budget session after the recess, Mr Vajpayee told mediapersons after the BJP parliamentary meeting that he agreed with Mr Sudarshan, adding, however, that it was for Mr Advani and the party to decide on his (Advanis) plans on retirement. Saying that Mr Sudarshan had made a good suggestion, Mr Vajpayee pointed out that in any case he was not holding any party post and did not have much work.

With regard to the second line of leadership in the party, he said, It is ready at any time to take over and it is necessary for them to take charge.

He also said that it was Mr Sudarshans personal view that he (Vajpayee), as prime minister, did not do much on the Ayodhya issue.

Everybody has the right to form an opinion, he said.

On the second affidavit filed by the government against former defence minister George Fernandes in the Supreme Court, he said, They have to take it back.
