There is an urgent need for establishing a national system by rural development and agriculture ministries for optimal utilisation of the proven space technologies for the overall benefit of the farmers, opined K Kasturirangan, former chairman, Isro and member of Rajya Sabha.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the National Symposium on Application of Space Technologies for Agriculture Development, Kasturirangan said that the Indian space and remote sensing agencies have developed various techniques using the space technology including predicting the agriculture productivity. The space scientists have demonstrated their capabilities and it is now the duty of the people who are at the helm of affairs to use it for the advantage of the poor, he pointed out.

Explaining the project on the agriculture prediction, the former space scientist said that the Union agriculture department has already initiated a programme called forecast of agriculture production through space, agro-meteorology and land level observations (FASAL), which has mandated to predict 14 crops.
