US keen on overall UN reform

The US is in favour of UN Security Council expansion but is more concerned about the need for overall reform of the world body and is in consultation with important countries including India, ambassador Shirin Tahir-Kheli, head of the US delegation to the UNHCR said on Friday.

Talking to a select group of journalists here, Ms Kheli said that while Washington appreciated the need for UNSC expansion, more important was the overall reform of the world body.

In India for discussions with officials on the broad agenda of UN reforms, she said, India can be a very important and effective player. It is an important country and the US appreciates and understands the need for UNSC expansion. But that is part of the overall discussion and other things also need to be focused.

On US support to India for permanent membership at the UNSC, Ms Kheli, who met foreign secretary Shyam Saran and other senior officials of the external affairs ministry here, said the US had reiterated its support to Japan and the US supported expansion but not against effectiveness of the institution.
