UP Plans Leather SEZ At Kanpur

Uttar Pradesh will develop a special economic zone at Kanpur mainly to cater to the leather goods industry. The move is a follow-up of the new industrial policy announced by chief minister Mayawati recently. This will be the fourth SEZ to be developed by the state. The Kanpur SEZ will be located at Jajmau Banthar Patti near Unnao district border.

The state has felt the need to develop an SEZ at Kanpur in view of its huge forex potential. The country’s leather goods export is worth about Rs 1,200 crore at present.

The proposed SEZ, to be developed by the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation, will come up on a 1000-acre plot, and the corporation has already pumped around Rs 20 crorte into the project. The process of land acquisition is already on. Selection of a consultancy firm for conducting a techno-economic feasibility study is likely to be comleted within a month, Mayawati said.

Gas Authority of India will supply gas for the power plant being set up in the Kanpur SEZ.

The chief minister also said the proposal regarding construction of byepass through Kanpur is under consideration of the National Highway Authority. The proposal to complete the remaining 15km-long ring road has been sent to the railway ministry, she added.

The work on the Ganga barrage being set up at Kanpur is in full swing and it will be completed by October next year.

Mayawati said an apparel park with latest technology and facilities will be developed on a 150-acre plot, involving about Rs 21 crore at Electronic City near New Delhi. The park will ensure that UP remains ahead of its new international competitors in the apparel industry like Vietnam, Mexico, Nepal, and Bangladesh, she claimed.
