The roads ministry and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are at loggerheads over what rate of interest should be charged from concessionaires in lieu of rescheduling their premium payment to enable them to pay lesser amounts in the initial years and higher amounts in the latter part while maintaining the net present value of the overall amount intact.

?As per NHAI proposal, the rate should be 10%, whereas the roads ministry is keen for a 12% rate,? an official said. Sources said that a few rounds of discussions on the subject have taken place with no consensus emerging as yet.

GMR was the first one to send its proposal for rescheduling the premium payments to which the NHAI board agreed to in March. After the Centre agrees for rescheduling the payment and once the Cabinet nod is received, around 25 projects would get to avail of the benefit.
