Anchor: Jonty Rhodes
By Priya Adivarekar
It cant get better than South African cricket legend Jonty Rhodes hosting a travel show because hes one travel buff whose love for travelling knows no bounds. The cricketer confessed to being in love with the snow-clad mountains of Gulmarg and backwaters of Kerala in the past. However, South Africa with Jonty Rhodes sees the blue eyed South African tourism ambassador in India turn into a travel show anchor with NDTV Good Times only for a specific region though.
A three-part mini series, the show explores the 15-day journey of Rhodes and four Indians, who had won an all expense paid trip to South Africa with the cricketer. The entire itinerary of the trip was conceptualised by the South African tourism department, with Rhodes taking charge as a guide to the travellers (and us). They take us through several cities including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and the picturesque Garden route stretch. The fact that Rhodes is a big fan of outdoor adventure activities comes across in this show as he bungee jumps his way into the winners (and your) heart. It takes a little time for the four explorers to sink in the feeling of walking around with the legendary cricketer. But very soon, you notice that they have formed an incredible bond, thanks to their mutual love for travelling.
The big five (as they like to call themselves) explore different parts of the country, while trying several activities, one after another. Be it exploring the vibrant sights of Garden Route or facing their fears by opting for bungee jumping, Rhodes has made sure that the winners get a taste of all the popular activities available in South Africa. In one part, Rhodes takes them for some adventurous safari ride in the wild (including one at The Kruger Park), where the group spot lions, tigers, rhinos, deers among a host of other animals. The group also spent some memorable moments, especially while playing beach cricket in Pezula.
South Africa with Jonty Rhodes makes you feel that you are exploring the rainbow nation with Rhodes and the group. You can feel their fears, happiness, and the adrenaline rush while watching the group explore different parts of the country. As the host and guide, Jonty Rhodes is at his charming best. Although he has never hosted a show before, Rhodes has faced the camera like a professional. Its sad that the show is limited to just three parts as its a great watch for travel buffs. Overall, the series deserves two thumbs up.
Verdict : If you love travelling, dont miss this show for anything.
