The much-awaited passenger train from Kolkata to Dhaka, which was put on hold due to security reasons, may finally get another chance to roll. The issue is likely to be taken up at the meeting of the Saarc transport ministers in the Capital on Friday.

The train service, from Chitpur, near Kolkatta to Joydevpur in Bangladesh, is expected to begin from mid-September. The plan was put in backburner following Indias concerns regarding security and infrastructure bottlenecks. Sources said there were both diplomatic and security reasons behind this delay.

The Bangladesh government had set up a customs check post in Dhaka only and they were not willing to anymore check posts till the Indian border. This was unacceptable to the Indian government as they can not allow a train with no customs check to enter the country, a government source said.

In July, Indian Railways conducted a trial run of the passenger train.
