The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) will issue recommendations on accelerating growth of Internet and broadband penetration to the government over the next three weeks. It will also issue the final consultation paper on unified licensing over the next couple of weeks, Trai officials said on the sidelines of open house on the Net and broadband.

Interestingly, cable operators, who have now come under the purview of Trai, came to the open house and raised their concerns about being wiped out by large private telcom operators. Some of them asked Trai to arrange for educational sessions on technological advances.

Trai chairman Pradip Baijal and Trai member DPS Seth asked them to file their written responses during the next few days on the issues listed in the consultation paper.

Moreover, some Internet service providers demanded that Trai should allow Internet telephony via PC-to-PSTN (public service telephone network) connectivity and vice-versa and introduce termination charges on same lines as that for fixed line and wireless operators.

Many ISPs also asked Trai to unbundle the local loop both in fixed and wireless arena.
