With chief economic adviser AK Lahiri set to leave and KM Chanadrashekhar already taking up his new role as revenue secretary , the finance ministry seems to be in for a complete shuffle of its top officers. It also seems set to come up with its new Budget team, even though it may be slightly early for that. The suspense over Lahiris successor continues.

With Lahiri going on a government deputation as executive director to the Asian Development Bank, the government may have to create an additional post to fill his vacancy. And the names of some of the countrys top economists are being discussed as his successor. Meanwhile, disinvestment secretary P V Bhide, IAS officer of the 1973 batch, is rumored to be the next revenue secretary in the finance ministry. Its still not clear who would take up Bhides current job. At present economic affairs secretary D Subbarao holds additional charge of the revenue department. Sanjiv Mishra heads expenditure and Vinod Rai is secretary financial sector. The top job - that of finance secretary- still remains open.

Traditionally, the job is handed over to the senior most secretary in the ministry, but with three of the secretaries being of the same batch-1972, much will depend on finance minister P Chidmabarams opinion is likely to would matter the most. Meanwhile the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) too have got new chairmen.
