The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Thailand as not an affected area and safe from the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

According to its report on SARS as of April, Thailand has no local transmission in-country, a statement by the Royal Thai Consulate General said here on Thursday.

The special Asean leaders summit and Asean-China leaders meeting on SARS had adopted a joint declaration in Bangkok, which comprised the political guidelines and practical measures combating the epidemic.

Notable among which are the proper pre-departure and on arrival screening for international travellers and strengthening immigration and customs control.

The killer epidemic has already claimed close to 1,000 lives across the world, mostly from Hong Kong and China.
