Telcos Should File Separate Accounts: Trai

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has asked the telecom operators to submit accounting statements separately for every network service for each of the licensed areas. The move is interesting in the backdrop of the policy moving towards a unified licensing regime.

Various service areas include basic telephone, national long distance, international long distance, cellular mobile, Internet service, very small aperture terminal service, radio paging, public mobile radio trunk, global mobile personal communications service.

The regulation will be applicable also to companies holding unified access licences, says a Trai release. The accounting separation reports would help Trai to monitor and measure financial performance of individual telecom products. It would also help identify the cross-subsidisation practices, if any.
