Tea prices across the South continued to show steady increase this week and indications were that the trend will continue in the days ahead.

However, with the start of the year, electronic auctions have been done away with in the three auction centres Kochi, Coonoor and Coimbatore. Trade sources attributed this to Tea Board denying payments to Accenture which had been running the show. With board readying a new e-auction platform, the centres were likely to stay manual till the new system was in place. In Kochi, over 15 lakh kg was offered and in the CTC dust but for high-priced ones which were steady to irregularly easier, the mediums and below ones were dearer by Rs 2-5 a kg. Blenders were active and there was also export enquiry. Highgrown Orthodox leaf grades were higher by Rs 2-4 and medium primary ones were easier by the same amount. Exports to CIS and West Asia were active in the leaf segment.
