Tata Indicom, AMD unveil personal internet communicator

Tata Indicom in collaboration with AMD has announced the launch of the Personal Internet Communicator (PIC). This will offer internet connectivity and Microsoft Windows-based computing capabilities. Among the features on offer are a 128 MB memory, 10 GB hard disk and an audio port.

Tata Industries managing director Kishor Chaukar said that triple play - voice, data and video - was the way forward. For triple play, infrastructure, content and the device are the key issues. Technology is moving at a fast pace and one has to keep pace with it, he pointed out. While there is no indication on how much the PIC will cost, VSNL broadband business head Shashi Kalathil said that various options were being worked out. We are in the midst of test marketing, which is being conducted in four cities. This is a bundled offering and we are examining various pricing options, he added.

AMD India managing director Ajay Marathe said this was part of the 50x15 strategy. Essentially, this will enable 50% of the worlds poulation with net connectivity and computing capabilities by 2015.
