Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, launched a diatribe against this years Padma Awards on micro-blogging site Twitter. Without taking names, she criticised the conferring of Padma Vibhushan on both Brajesh Mishra and Montek Singh Ahluwalia.

Leaving even her own party in a flutter over her remarks, she reflected the BJPs discomfort with with former national security advisor Brajesh Mishras being cosy with the UPA. Today a former PM is Padma Vibhushan awardee- so is his secretary, Swaraj tweeted, referring to Vajpayees award in 1992, and the fact that Mishra was his principal secretary in the PMO during the NDA years. It is no secret that Mishra went against the BJPs line on the Indo-US nuclear deal and this award is being seen as a sign of gratitude from Manmohan Singh for this support.

More scathing words were reserved for deputy chairman of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia. There are definitely some men of achievements (on the list). There are also those who have been honoured for their failures, she tweeted. The allusion to Ahluwalia was clear when BJPs MP Chandan Mitra said, looking at the rising prices and the failure of the government to control them, it was perhaps not the right time to confer the Padma Vibhushan on Ahluwalia.
