The new minister from DMK, who took charge on Wednesday after getting the green signal from the headquarters in Chennai, was mobbed by journalists, particularly cameramen from various television channels.
The minister was constantly prompted by television journalists and their cameramen to look straight into their cameras for that exclusive moment. So, in order to get that shot of Mr Maran, the television journos kept shouting, Sir, here...sir here.
Some were lucky but most were not.
However, one scribe had the presence of mind and screamed: Sir, Sun TV, this side. That was enough for the new minister to change sides.
To put things in perspective, Mr Maran and Sun Network are part of the same family.
The decision of the Bharatiya Janata Party to make political capital out of the India Shining and the Bharat Uday campaign did not go uncontested within government.
Both the Prime Ministers Office and the finance ministers office are learnt to have expressed their reservations to party campaign managers. At least one senior BJP leader even told the deputy Prime Minister LK Advani not to name his rath yatra the Bharat Uday Yatra on the grounds that this was a government-funded campaign.
Clearly the party bosses were in no mood to listen.
