Operations of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) in West Bengal were seriously hit on Wednesday, following a strike called by the All India Nabard Employees Association in support of its five-point charter of demands.

Nabard Employees Association and Officers Association said here in a statement that the strike elicited support from many trade unions while the Union finance minister P Chidambaram was also moved to settle the demands of Nabard staff.

The demands include maintenance of development financial institution status for Nabard and concessionary funds from the Reserve Bank of India and the government to Nabard, so that it could be channelled to landless, small and marginal farmers at affordable interest rates.

They alleged that the police used force in Maharashtra to break the strike at the instance of the management.

Police made several arrests at centres like Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram, the statement said.
