Taking the battle to Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modis hometurf, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday attacked ruling BJP for pitting one community against another and trying to derive political mileage out of it.

If the leaders take to incitement and walk the path of destruction, what inspiration the new generation would draw from the depressive environment that surrounds them, Ms Gandhi said in an apparent reference to recent communal violence in the state in which a close to 1,000 people lost their lives.

Some people, to further their vested interests, are deliberately driving a wedge between different communities, she said, she told a public meeting at koba near here where the Jain muni Acharya Mahapragyaji, who led ahimsa yatra from Churu in Rajasthan to Ahmedabad, is staying.

Addressing another function at Morvi near here during her day-long visit to Gujarat, she accused the BJP of always trying to gain something by fomenting divisions among the people.
